Edison and Ford Winter Estates
View Map
Thomas Edison received no formal education because he was homeschooled - his mother was a teacher, yet he created the forerunners of many of the electric lights, appliances, machinery and methods we take for granted today. The inventive genius of Edison is evident throughout his 14-acre riverfront estate. His botanical gardens reflect his love of exotic foliage and search for useful materials. A 9,000 square foot museum houses memorabilia related to Edison's life. Also on display is his unique Model T Ford, a prototype presented to him by his friend Henry Ford. In 1885 Thomas Edison built his winter home in Ft. Myers, and in 1916 his good friend, Henry Ford, purchased a home next door. Visitors will also have the opportunity to view the lush gardens and quaint winter home of Henry Ford. This charming setting along the river of Ft. Myers is a wonderful way to spend a morning or afternoon.
Naples Museum of Art

The Naples Museum of Art, located at the Naples Philharmonic Center for the Arts, is the largest art museum in the Southwest Florida area. In the museum's galleries guests will find an eclectic, international-caliber collection of paintings, drawings and sculptures. The permanent collection features two major exhibits: The Gow Collection of Ancient Chinese Art which spans a time frame of nearly 2,000 years, offering an overview of the treasures that gave Eastern expression its timeless allure. From Fang Hu pottery vases fashioned circa 450 B.C. to 19th century overlay glass, the Gow Collection features artworks that show remarkable diversity while demonstrating a great mastery of materials and technique. The American Modern Collection features 277 American paintings and works on paper covering the years 1900-1955. The works on display are a sampling of that collection, highlighting the profound change in the way American artists came into their own by pulling away from the European tradition. Early works by Arshille Gorky, Stuart Davis, Jackson Pollock, Alexander Calder, Marsden Hartley and many others make this collection a rich resource for both scholars and museum visitors.
