The
Heard Museum is the pride of Phoenix and one of the oldest cultural
centers in the city. It was built in 1929 to house the collection
of Dwight and Maie Heard. The Heards came to Arizona in 1895 and avidly
collected Southwest Indian Arts and Crafts, including twined and coiled
basketry, hand formed pottery and rich, colorful rugs. Over the years,
the Heard collection has grown immensely and today includes some 75,000
cataloged artifacts. Major acquisitions include the late Senator Barry
Goldwater's Kachina Doll Collection, the Read Mullan Collection of
Contemporary Navajo Rugs, the C. G. Wallace Jewelry Collection and
the Fred Harvey Indian Art Collection. |

Phoenix Art Museum
View Map |
This is one of the
largest art museums in the Southwest, and within its labyrinth of
halls and galleries is a respectable collection that spans the major
artistic movements from the Renaissance to the present. Exhibits cover
decorative arts, historic fashions, Spanish-colonial furnishings and
religious art, and, of course, works by members of the Cowboy Artists
of America. The popular Thorne Miniature Collection consists of tiny
rooms on a scale of 1 inch to 1 foot. Because this museum is so large,
it frequently mounts traveling blockbuster exhibits. |
